Location, location, location. If there’s one thing real estate agents and wedding planners agree on, it’s the importance of location — especially if you’re planning a destination wedding.

Many people associate destination weddings with white sandy beaches or tropical oases. And while yes, those are popular options, they’re not the only choices. Keep reading to get the scoop on four underrated locations in the U.S. for your destination wedding.

Traverse City, Michigan

Also known as the Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City is a popular place for family vacations, bachelorette parties, and wine tours. It’s located near the top of the Lower Peninsula (the tip of the ring finger of the Michigan hand, if we’re getting specific), about four hours from Detroit. The Traverse City Airport offers non-stop flights to and from over twenty major cities, making it easy for non-Michigan residents to travel in for your big day.

Visitors love the picturesque views of Grand Traverse Bay, historic lighthouses, and outdoor adventures at Sleeping Bear Dunes. There are also over forty wineries in the area — perfect for rehearsal dinners or wedding weekend festivities.

Popular Venues:

Jacob’s Farm offers a variety of options for wedding ceremonies and receptions on its 40-acre farm.

Planning a micro wedding? Mission Table is a farm-to-table restaurant that’s known for local ingredients and mouth-watering seasonal menus.

Favorite favors: You can’t have a wedding in Traverse City without cherries. Stop by Cherry Republic for cherry jam, salsa, candy, or BBQ sauce and give your guests a taste of the region to help remember your special day.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Nestled in the heart of central Virginia, Charlottesville is home to dozens of wineries, a bustling pedestrian mall, and many important moments in U.S. history. It’s an hour from Richmond and less than three hours from Washington D.C., making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway.

Popular Venues:

Located steps away from the iconic Downtown Mall, Common House is a modern social club that offers sweeping rooftop views and upscale decor.

For a more historical feel, check out Monticello, the former home of Thomas Jefferson and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Transportation tip: Out-of-town guests may find it easier to fly into Richmond, VA and rent a car for the hour-long drive to Charlottesville.

St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis is a city with a rich history, diverse wildlife, and delicacies like toasted ravioli and St. Louis-style pizza. It might not be at the top of your destination dream list, but we think it’s worth considering due to its central location and mix of classic elegance and industrial charm.

Popular Venues:

History buffs will love the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum located on the Missouri River.

Part gallery, part concert venue and event space, The Lucas Schoolhouse offers a unique and charming backdrop to your big day.

If you want to mix it up, you can’t beat the Saint Louis Science Center for a fun twist on your wedding celebration.

Before the big day: If you have extra time in St. Louis, make sure to check out the City Museum! This “weirdly wonderful” playground will surprise and delight your guests of all ages.

Savannah, Georgia

Name a better combo than cobblestone streets, moss-draped oaks, and temperature weather. Savannah is known for its walkability, vibrant arts scene, and historic Southern charm.

Popular Venues:

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens offer a variety of event rental spaces for anywhere from 40 to 200 guests.
