Even though it technically doesn’t start until June 20, many people view Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial kickoff to summer. This season is the second most popular time to get married, with June, July, and August among the most popular wedding months.
While popular, summer weddings bring their own set of challenges like busy schedules, unbearable temperatures, and sweat — so much sweat. Whether you’re getting married or you’re attending an upcoming ceremony or reception, keep these summer wedding etiquette tips in mind for an enjoyable celebration.

4 Etiquette Tips for Wedding Guests
- Stay hydrated.
We all know the importance of drinking water, but sometimes we forget how excessive heat or alcohol can affect our hydration. Be extra mindful of your water intake at a summer wedding, especially if you’re drinking alcohol and dancing up a storm. The saying “one margarita, two margarita, three margarita, floor” is not just a catchy country song or boardwalk T-shirt — it’s an accident waiting to happen. While there’s nothing better than an ice cold beverage on a hot summer’s day, make sure to pair your cocktails with some ice cold water to avoid a painful hangover or, worse, heat exhaustion.
- Bring layers.
While summer weddings are typically hot and sweaty, sunshine is no guarantee. Be prepared for a change in the weather or a dip in temperature at night and bring a light shawl or jacket to throw over your dress. Likewise, wear something you can easily pare down if the temperature suddenly spikes.
- Follow the dress code.
When it’s hot outside, it’s preferable to wear light colors and fabrics. Just don’t forget the dress code in your quest for comfort! Light colors like rose pink, butter yellow, and tan are acceptable, but don’t even think about wearing white. If the dress code is black tie or formal, a floor-length gown might feel suffocating. Look for a breathable fabric like organza or chiffon that will let you breathe while dressing the part.
- Wear deodorant.
We’ve all been there. You’re dancing up a storm at a wedding reception when you suddenly catch a whiff of something putrid. Is it you? Or is it your friend doing the floss beside you? Save yourself the stress (and the not-so-subtle armpit sniffing) and apply extra deodorant before attending a summer wedding. Bonus points if you bring it in your purse for easy reapplication during the event. Your dance mates will thank you!

4 Etiquette Tips for Wedding Planners
- Plan ahead.
Between graduations, family vacations, and kids’ activities, summer is one of the busiest times of the year. As such, your guests will appreciate ample heads up for your wedding. Give them at least six months’ notice to add it to their schedule. Planning a destination summer wedding? Send your save the dates six to twelve months ahead of time so your guests can do their research and decide about the trip.
- Keep it cool.
If you’re getting married during the peak summer season, proper air circulation is a must. It will not only help you and your guests have a good time, but it will help avoid health issues like dehydration or overheating. Ask your venue about air conditioning, fans, and shaded spaces to help keep your guests comfortable. If heat is a major concern, provide hand fans during the ceremony. You could even design your wedding program as a hand fan to kill two birds with one stone. - Plan hydration stations.
Water is always a good idea but especially when temperatures are heightened. Designate a few hydration stations throughout your wedding venue to keep your guests safe, healthy, and hydrated. If you’re thinking about offering a late-night snack during your reception, ice cream or popsicles can be a sweet surprise and also help cool down your guests. Win-win! - Offer options.
While barbecue or a burger bar might seem like the perfect summer wedding cuisine, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Be mindful of your guests with dietary preferences and provide a few options to appeal to everyone.
